A Proposal of Data Mining Model for the Classification of an Act of Violence as a Case of Attempted Femicide in the Peruvian Scope
    (2023-07-09) Sharit More; Wilfredo Ticona
Nowadays, femicide is one of the biggest problems worldwide in which the human rights of the victims are violated. In addition, it also constitutes a public health concern, with serious physical and psychological consequences. The objective of this research is to implement a data mining model to classify an act of violence as a case of attempted femicide in Peru. This study used public data of 2021 of the statistics portal National Aurora Program of the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP). The applied methodology was based on 5 phases: Data collection, data understanding, data preprocessing, data mining and model evaluation. Results obtained with Balanced Random Forest and Logistic Regression models demonstrated the best performances with a Recall of 0.88 and 0.86, respectively. Furthermore, the application of SMOTE improved the performance of both models. This investigation will contribute to find patterns related to the characteristics of aggressors and victims, that can help to put into action new instruments based on Data Mining to prevent more murders of women.KeywordsAttempted FemicideBalanced Random ForestClassification ModelData MiningFeature selectionLight GBMLogistic regressionSMOTE

Hydra: Funding State Prediction for Kickstarter Technology Projects Using a Multimodal Deep Learning
    (2022-05-25) Alonso Puente; Marks Calderón
Since crowdfunding started, thousands of entrepreneurs have presented their projects to the public to fund them. During the 2009–2019 period, 37% of all Kickstarter projects, one of the most popular crowdfunding platforms, were successfully funded. Different Machine Learning algorithms have been used, considering all the categories in this platform to develop predictive models. However, their research works only reached 20% for the Technology category. The main aim of this study is to develop a Multimodal Deep Learning model with three layers: a Multilayer Perceptron for metadata, a Convolutional Neural Network for project descriptions, and a Bidirectional LSTM model for backers comments. This proposal can predict funding state of Technology projects on Kickstarter. In order to train the model, we created a dataset with 27K Technology projects on Kickstarter between 2009 and 2019. The performance of this proposal reached an AUC value of 93%. Thus, the problem was solved with a different approach that combinates different types of networks to improve results.

Importance of ICT for Perspective and Strategy in Education
(2022-04-01) Jubitza Franciskovic; Erin Fabiola Alvarado
ICT-enhanced educational tools and approaches offer a new range of options and opportunities to improve the efficiency of teaching and learning to boost individual student performance and thus, in many cases, avoid the challenge of exclusion and poverty related to skills deficit. The authors suggest that digital games, online applications, tablet use, MOOCs, and micro courses can boost student exposure to specific course material, thus assisting in the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

Redéfinir les droits de l’homme : perspectives à partir d’une pédagogie horizontale
    (2022-07-01) Carlos Gonzalez-Palacios
Corporate governance research is often limited in its ability to employ within-firm estimators, which address time-invariant endogeneity, when the variables of interest exhibit low time variation (for example, ownership and board independence). The problem is further exacerbated if data for multiple points in time needs to be hand-collected. We offer simulation-based methodological guidance to improve the statistical power of within-firm estimators in the presence of low time variation. We illustrate the usefulness of our simulation results by replicating two influential studies on ownership and board independence and extending them with a within-firm estimator. Based on widely used databases as well as a novel granular database, we document the different degrees and nature of time variation of ownership and board independence across jurisdictions and subgroups by listed status, family control and complexity of ownership structure. Researchers can use our findings to optimize the hand-collection and pre-processing of governance data and thereby increase statistical power and/or to distinguish whether lack of significance is due to low time variation as opposed to absence of a true relationship between their governance variable of interest and the respective outcome.

The Life Cycle in Startup Valuation
    (2023-04-20) Sergio Rafael Bravo Orellana
The business valuation process begins with the projection of the company’s sales or income, so it is important to establish how they will evolve over time. It is possible to verify that the businesses follow a common pattern in the evolution of their income, and these have a trend line in the form of an S inclined forward, defining the life cycle of the business. When new companies (startups) are valued, it is important to visualize their life cycle, since it usually takes time for them to generate profits or positive cash flows, therefore the investment stage and the moment where they prove their viability are prolonged. If these startups correspond to businesses based on the intensive use of technologies, their life cycles show an even greater trend in the duration of the investment stage, the introduction stage is slow, but if they managed to be successful ventures, they have rapid growth and their largest dimensions market, until reaching the stage of maturity. However, not all technological businesses are similar, so for the analysis the type of innovation with which the business worked must be considered, since the shape of the life cycle will be different in the investment period, the speed of growth and the size of the market.

The role of the family environment in innovative female entrepreneurship in Latin America: cases from Colombia, Peru, and Argentina
(2022-12-13) Luz Marina Ferro-Cortes; Nancy Matos; Florence Pinot de Villechenon
In this chapter, we focus on understanding the distinct roles that the family environment has played in the dynamics of Innovative Female Entrepreneurship (IFE) in Latin America, using the lens of the family embeddedness perspective. The IFE is a new phenomenon which, to date, has been reported scantly in the literature. Through a study of contrasting cases in three Latin American countries, it was found that the IFE emerges in evolving cultural contexts, which affect the family environment by accentuating new values (equity, solidarity etc.) and the empowerment of women. In this context, the family environment and entrepreneurship generate dynamic pull-push circles. In the preliminary stages of entrepreneurship, it roots the women's identity-building processes and their orientation towards entrepreneurship; in the subsequent stages it provides mentoring and tangible and intangible resources (knowledge, networks) nourishing the continuous process of formation and exploitation of opportunities for value generation.

Transition to Telework in an Academic Setting in Peru
(2023-05-31) Oswaldo Morales; Sergio Morales; Gareth H. Rees
Widespread disruptions of the Covid-19 pandemic affected people and organizations worldwide, but deeply transformed universities that in a short period of time were forced to switch from traditional teaching and learning in face-to-face classrooms to intensive use of online platforms and teleworking for professors. The transition was challenging and costly because, although advances in online education programs had started, most institutions implemented rapid change without previous experience. This chapter presents the case of ESAN Business University in Peru. The discussion is based on a study conducted to identify features of the organizational culture that facilitated change. The analysis is targeted on 2 pillars of Human Centered Management: Pillar 2 – disruption resilience and Pillar 4 – agility, and ESAN's organizational culture is measured using Hofstede's Organization Culture Dimensions to test alignment that supported rapid adaptation and better outcome of the transformation affecting performance and wellbeing of professors and students.

(2020-03-01) Christina Saksanian; Myriam Martínez-Fiestas; Juan S. Timana
The recent proliferation of collaborative models of consumption has called attention of organizations, governments, and the academy to understand the impact of these new forms of consumption on the economic scenario. However, specific efforts to understand the changes in consumer behavior are so far scarce. This chapter compiles the available knowledge on how consumers are coping with these new forms of consumption exploring the motivators and obstacles affecting their behavior. Additionally, some relevant information on the current status of the adoption of different forms of collaborative consumption, the collaborative consumer profile, as well as some perspectives for the future are also explored.
