The mining industry contribution in territorial development: Peruvian case study

Abstract

Mining activities usually happen in remote areas, very away from the main cities, and where usually does not exist presence of the state, therefore mining companies articulate actions with others social actors to achieve the development of the territories where they operate. The objective of this research is knowing how the industry mining is contributing to the territorial development of the areas where they operate. To achieve, the grounded theory method was used, through interviews with various industry players in the mining industry, former governments official and community leaders, generating categories and subcategories based on the data. The results were that the mining companies contribute to the territorial development of five ways: participation responsible politics, participation in executive tables, participation in public management, participation in the public planning and participation in the use of multiple resources.
