This case study proposes the challenges that people face when making investment decisions at crucial moments in their lives. The character of the case is Luis Quintana, a 34-year-old who has invested in real estate for 10 years. With great skill and market knowledge, he was able to multiply the little capital with which he had begun, which was a family inheritance. The accumulated wealth allowed him, his wife and two children to live comfortably. The case is set in August 2005, at which point Luis Quintana was to sell properties representing about 30 percent of his assets. In this case, Luis is making a transition from his career in real estate to the area of financial investments. It is not intended that students propose alternative investment portfolios for Luis Quintana in this case. Rather, the case is ideal for use as a first approximation to the investment process that everyone faces and to understand the work of the investment adviser throughout the process.
