"Circular Economy in Industrial Production, a Comparative Analysis of Implementation Pathways in Peru and Australia"

Resumen

"To achieve an economy that is capable of sustainable growth, it will be vital for businesses to transition from linear production processes to adopting Circular Economy (CE) principles of production. CE Principles seek to create closed material loops, lengthen product lifecycles, and reduce the amount of waste produced, therefore, they support both environmental stewardship and business competitiveness. The analysis within this paper will detail the transition of industrial parks located in Peru and Industrial Zones in Australia, to incorporate CE practices such as eco-innovation, waste valorization, and permanent production systems. From a qualitative and comparative perspective, an examination will take place to determine how collaborative relationships with various stakeholders (including technologists), technological capability, supportive regulatory structures, and financial incentives affect the ability to scale up CE initiatives effectively. The successful implementation of CE in Peru has focused on industrial symbiosis as a promising tool to lower cost and reduce the environmental impacts of industry, however, the lack of developed recovery institutions, technical expertise, and clear regulations limits the largescale deployment of CE methods in Peru. In Australia, there is a stronger integration of renewable energy and resource recovery systems within the nation’s industrial zones due to government supported financial incentives and a structured compliance framework, however, regulatory fragmentation and inconsistent levels of industry participation negatively impact Australia’s ability to transition to a circular economy. Although both countries are experiencing challenges with structural barriers associated with implementing CE, they also both possess opportunities that will facilitate the transition to a circular economy. Achieving a sustainable future to produce goods within industrial sectors in both countries will require a comprehensive policy supported by all the components of governance, technology, finance and stakeholder collaboration that promotes both a more competitive business environment and a sustainable global economy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026."
