The motive of this paper is to know the connection between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the license to operate (SLO) within the mining industry. Also, this paper introduces a comparative case study evaluation of three mining operations in Peru. This analysis is qualitative in nature and is complemented by secondary source of information and the emerging literature on SLO. The findings show that there are different states of this relationship. Mining companies should focus on community responsibility, environmental responsibility and stakeholder engagement to get SLO, otherwise, if they fail in one or both responsibilities, SLO is partially accepted or withdrawn. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd
